Workouts at home in a more high-tech way
Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Wii have incorporated motion controls. Nintendo has the Wii Remote and Nintendo Wii U, Sony has PlayStation Move and Eye, while Mircosoft Xbox 360 has Kinect Motion. Since these control motions were featured to these consoles, they have transformed many lazy couch potatoes into enthusiastic fitness buffs. And the best of all? With these enhanced game consoles, they can do their workouts — anytime or everyday — in the comfort of their own homes.
Top 10 video games that promote health, fitness, exercise and training
This hub evaluates the top fitness video games that, we believe, provide sufficient workouts as well as fun for the game players. Games are also judged on the factors of visual appeal, accuracy of movement tracking, session sequencing, and skill-based elements. These video fitness games have made it in this list because they score pretty high on these factors. These games listed here are in no particular order.
1. Wii Fit Plus
Wii Fit Plus is an enhanced version of Wii Fit, Nintendo’s top-selling fitness video game. Like its predecessor, Wii Fit Plus also features the Wii Balance Board which is a scale-like controller. It determines your body weight and also calculates your body mass index. Like the original Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus is also packed with every feature and exercise. Wii Fit plus has more than 40 brand new additional exercise and fitness games, such as strength-training exercise, yoga, and more mini-games that are catered to appeal to anyone from casual gamers to experienced, die-hard fitness buffs.
2. Nike+Kinect Training
Nike+Kinect Training for Microsoft Xbox 360, of all the consoles, can track a gamer’s body positioning with any actual accuracy degree. Microsoft collaborates with shoe and sports apparel giant Nike and developer Sumo Digital, which gave us Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Training Transformed to bring the most absolute fitness video game so far. Users can work out any time they want without leaving home by using Nike+Kinect Training.
3. Your Shape: Fitness Evolved
This is the best interactive fitness game so far to come out for the Microsoft Xbox 360 with the Kinect feature, which is sold separately. Together with this game, they track your movements while you’re working out. It leads you, through precise movements, to boost your body condition, work out your muscles, and improve your cardio. You’ll be able to have your everyday training and exercise routine without leaving home, or face the embarrassment of being inside the gym.
4. EA Sports Active 2
This interactive sports software is developed by Electronic Arts Canada. Unlike its predecessor EA Sports Active which is only available for the Wii console, EA Sports Active 2 is available for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with their own respective motion controls. The game is equipped with three sensors that wirelessly connect to the console of your preference. EA Sports Active 2 is expected to put you through a rigorous 9-week exercise program. It comes with several exercises with numerous categories, ranging from cardio to upper body. The great thing about this game is that it also allows you to create custom workouts. The arm sensor also monitors your heart rate, as well.
5. Just Dance 4
Just Dance 4 is the fourth installment of the music video game Just Dance series which is developed by Ubisoft Paris. This interactive game software has an abundance of fun, not only for those who aren’t natural dancers but also for dancing buffs, as well. As with other fitness games, Just Dance 4 also evaluates your performance and athleticism, and also creates a customized training program that fits your preference. Workouts include strength building, toning, or weight loss. You can choose a male or female trainer, which looks quite realistic, as does the whole look of the gym. Some of those exercise regimens require you to use weights. Just Dance 4 is available to all Wii, Wii U, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles with their respective motion controls (sold separately)
6. Kinect Sports
If you want more sports action, Kinect Sports (available for Xbox 360 with Kinect Motion control) will offer an amazing selection of sports that include bowling, boxing, track and field, football, volleyball and table tennis. The great thing about this is that it employs your entire body as the controller. It’s more fun to play when you’re with your family and friends. This is a great way to go beyond playing on the couch.
7. Zumba Fitness
The Zumba craze is still prevailing and enthusiasts are still agog with it. To introduce you to Zumba, it is a dance workout game with aerobic elements. It features dance styles that include hip-hop, soca, salsa, merengue, and mambo. It also includes martial arts, squats and lunges. And this is what this interactive software game is all about. For long-time Zumba enthusiasts, this game should be a great addition; however, for the Zumba neophytes, they will find it hard to follow for its lack of beginner’s instructions, so they can be a bit confusing. However, this won’t distract you from the pure joy of dancing and working out. This is a great cardio workout. The game is available for Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3.
8. UFC Personal Trainer
The name might intimidate you, but fret not. It is not as challenging as it sounds. The game, of course, is based on the popular Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). Like in any video fitness games, in the beginning it requires you to enter your weight, height, and gender. Expect to endure numerous workouts such as sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks. Some of these workouts also let you have the option to use weights or resistance bands. Its regimen ranges from the basic to advanced, all with tutorials included. You can also choose between the 30 and 60-day fitness plan if you want to achieve strength building, endurance, or weight loss. It is available for Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. Fans of mixed martial arts, though, may have equally mixed feelings about this as it isn’t exactly physically challenging as it seems.
9. Sports Champion
Available only on the PlayStation 3 (along with its Move motion control), this modest interactive software has a decent collection of different games such as table tennis, beach volleyball, gladiator duel, disc golf, bocce, and archery. These games are all fun to play; there are also mini-games that are equally enjoyable, too. This is good for both playing in groups as well as single player mode. This isn’t really a fitness-focused game; nevertheless, it gets your whole body moving, sweating it out, and burning a lot of calories in the process. You’ll feel really athletic in the end.
10. The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout
The popular reality TV series is translated into an interactive fitness video game for right in your own living room. It features trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper who will guide you through workouts as well as a nutritional and diet plan as you try to shed off pounds. It’s a serious workout video game for those who are intending to get fit and trim. This game is available for all Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.
